About MO at MMS

Math Olympiad (MO) at Macomb Middle School (MMS) is part of the middle school division of MOEMS (Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools). It is one of the most influential and fun-filled math competition programs in the US and around the world. The objectives are to teach multiple strategies for problem solving, develop mathematical flexibility in solving problems, and foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity.

There are five monthly contests, administered each month from November through March.

When/Where is it?

Math Olympiad at MMS will be Mondays, from 3:15-4:15 pm in Mrs. Patton’s room. It begins Monday, Oct 16, 2023. It will meet most Mondays. There will be coaching sessions and one contest each month, November through March. There is a calendar which indicates the dates we will not have MO. Math Olympiad is in Mrs. Patton’s room in the 7th grade area at MMS.

Who is it for?

This is for any student in grade 6, 7, or 8 who is interested in learning how math works, doing challenges, and solving problems. The Math Olympiad does not teach advanced math topics from beyond 8th grade. Rather, it helps students learn how to use strategies and middle school math concepts to solve interesting problems.

We are pretty flexible. Students may join at anytime.

Awards

There are individual and team scores. There are awards and certificates for individuals and the team. The awards are not the purpose.  The beauty of the problem solving and the mathematics are the focus.

Cost

There is no cost to participate in Math Olympiad at MMS. Parents are asked to contribute a snack or a drink from time to time (because it is nice to have a snack & drink for this after-school program ;-).
